I knew Stewart briefly but intensely back in the mid 90s after his first trip to Africa, when idealism still coursed through his veins, but before he went to work there and cynicism took over. He was unique; provocative yet compassionate, prolific yet detailed. He was so alive in every way that it's hard to comprehend that he has gone. He had a profound and positive effect on my life and I wish now that I had not placed him on such a high pedestal because although he always appeared to be invincible, clearly he was not.
