Dedicated to the memory of Stewart Parkinson

This site is a tribute to Stewart John Parkinson. Stewart achieved so much in his life, much more than many do in a longer lifetime.  He was wonderfully creative with an artistic flair which came through his drawings, his model making and his creative writing.  By age 20 he had published a book and worked in Paris.  He later worked with the NFL London Monarchs before taking time to spend a year travelling Africa with his then girlfriend (and later, wife) Sarah.  After working on condom brands he then moved to Nigeria with his wife before working in the States, where his daughter, Skyler, was born.

Stewart moved to different African countries working on a response to HIV/AIDS before settling again in the States with his family.

Stewart remarried for a brief period before returning to the UK.

An incredibly well-read man with a ridiculously sharp intellect, Stewart introduced many to the conundrum of Western aid to Africa and could debate for hours on this and many other subjects.

We remember him as a son, brother, uncle, father - and somebody you would want on your Trivial Pursuit team!

Thoughts

I knew Stewart briefly but intensely back in the mid 90s after his first trip to Africa, when idealism still coursed through his veins, but before he went to work there and cynicism took over. He was unique; provocative yet compassionate, prolific yet detailed. He was so alive in every way that it's hard to comprehend that he has gone. He had a profound and positive effect on my life and I wish now that I had not placed him on such a high pedestal because although he always appeared to be invincible, clearly he was not.

Oh Stewart, the world would have liked to keep you a bit longer. What to write about Stewart... I can almost hear his funny and snappy comments on anything I might write. I worked with Stewart at PSI - in the early 2000's when he was in Lagos and later for a short time in Washington DC. When he was in Lagos, I was his backstopper at the PSI HQ - it was a fun time, full of work and laughter, to which Stewart, which his sharp mind and ready wit contributed a lot. Bon voyage Stewart. My deep condolences for Skyler and everyone in his family.

Stewart was a colleague of mine at PSI. Although we did not work in the same part of the world, we did connect at the many international meetings and global retreats. I remember Stewart best when he would say something fantastic, thought-provoking, naughty or countercultural with a very sly smile on his face that didn't take long to broaden into a wonderful smile and laugh. Stewart was one of those rare gems that was different from most people but for those who had the pleasure to be with him we were lucky to share in his passions, fun and laughter while also becoming all the wiser. My thoughts are with Stewart's family and friends.
